Going out in Győr

CLUBBING

If I want to be brutally honest, I can’t suggest any 5 star club in Győr...
The niveau and number of discotheques have taken off a lot in the past 10 years or so. By niveau I mean the company, the environment and the musical variety.
But so that you are not left without information, I would recommend two places which sometimes can be quite good:
  • One is Pirates Dance Club (in Baross street, the High Street of Győr). Since smoking indoors has been banned (:-)) the niveau has taken up a bit too, but this is just my personal remark. Minimum age requirement is 25, so no need to worry that you will find yourself amongst a bunch of teenagersJ

  •  The other place is Mamma Mia. Age group here is mixed. The club usually invites star DJs and Hungarian pop singers to perform (inviting the newest "stars" from the Hungarian X-Factor is especially trendy nowadays).

SIMPLY GOING FOR A DRINK...

If you just simply would like to have a drink somewhere my personal recommendation would be
Cafe Frei.

The name giver is Tamás (Thomas) Frei, who has been a famous TV reporter creating high quality documentaries for years. During his travels he collected all the different types and ways of the art of coffee making. His coffee selection ranges from the Tibetien art all the way to the Caribbian. They also offer some nice hot chocolate specialties, teas and wines.
It is important to mention that all their products are fair trade. They purchase everything directly from the producers.
The place itself provides a pleasant atmosphere and prices are fairly cheap compared to some other pubs and cafeterias in the central.
The only downside is that drinks are only described in Hungarian. (But at least there are photos of the drinks, which might helps:-))

EATING OUT

Best restaurants in the heart of Győr

The Pálffy Restaurant

The Pálffy restaurant has become maybe the most popular restaurant in Győr in the past few years, especially since the Széchenyi Square has been renovated.

Their selection is based on traditional Hungarian meals and modern, classical food. I would say they have a nice balance there. Those who prefer to have a big chunk of meat on their plate a la Hungarian art will be just as much satisfied as those who simply would like to enjoy a nice bowl of healthy salad. Quality and variety has always been superb as far as I remember.
If asked, they will prepare your favourite food or make changes to those on the card as you wish.
It is highly recommended to try a nice Hungarian wine or a beer specialty escorting your meal.

Opening hours:
9am till midnight, on all days of the week.

The La Mareda Restaurant

The La Mareda doesn’t have a too wide selection of meals but they do put a big emphasize on quality. According to their strategy, they try to renew the greatest traditions of the Hungarian cuisine and blend it with the lightness and simplicity of the Mediterranean kitchen.

Opening hours:
Monday to Saturday: 8am  to midnight
Sunday:                     8am to 10pm

Matias Restaurant, Patisserie and Cafeteria

The Matias restaurant is a really pleasant place whether you just would like to enjoy a drink or have a great meal. If you wander around in the city you will definitely bump into it as it can be found in Baross street. Just like Pálffy or the La Mareda restaurants, they too offer traditional Hungarian, international and Mediterranean meals.
In fact, their specialties lie in wines. They have their own winery and a wide selection of the best brands. Moreover, if you liked any of their wines you can buy it in their winery shop which is right next door to the restaurant.
During the spring and summer season they also sell very nice pancakes and lángos with different toppings (sour cream, garlic or cheese or combining these three) which really shouldn’t be missed.

Opening hours:
Every day from 8am to 10pm

"Special" experience
The Matróz (means Sailor) is the oldest restaurant of the town based in a 200 years old building at the Dunakapu (Danube gate) square.
If you are a fan of fish dishes and would like to try them in the Hungarian way, this is one of the best choice there is.
Though I would like to note that if visiting this particular restaurant, you shouldn't expect beautifully decorated interiors or high standards with regards to serving. The Matróz is more the pub-restaurant art of gastronomical place so my suggestion would be just to focus on the culinary delights and leave other factors out of sight.:-)

Opening hours:
Monday to Thursday & Sunday             9am to 10pm
Friday & Saturday                                 9am to 11pm

Of course there are plenty other restaurants in and around the town to try. Chinese and Spanish foods are also available just as the usual junkies like McDonalds and Pizza Hut.

One thing is for sure, if nothing else gets you excited in this town (which I honestly hope can’t happen) the meals definitely will.

I have escorted many foreigners through Győr in the past 10 years, amongst them British, Swedish, Czech, Turkish, German, Swiss, American, Canadian, Korean. It only happened once (! means 90% satisfaction guarantee:-P) that one guy wasn’t too impressed with what he saw, but what he ate has also made him think twice! He confessed that just the food he had has compensated him for every minute of which he thought was boring...:-)
